This sampler, created by Pennsylvania resident Elizabeth Leoser in 1832, is one of three samplers known that depict a Pennsylvania state map. Elizabeth attended the Penn Township Public School in Philadelphia and likely copied her design from S. Augustis Mitchell’s contemporary 1831 “Map of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware”. One notable inclusion in Elizabeth’s translation of her home state is the inclusion of Juniata County, which wasn’t formed until 1831.
